President’s Report

Published on 1st March 2019 in Members News

Dear Members

Since my last report the new year has come and gone and a new golf season is just about to commence.  Sunday March 10 will be the club’s main opening day event sponsored by the past club President’s and this weekend is the Terry Veale Leschenault Classic which is always a popular event. During January the Australia Day Classic sponsored by Bethanie Lifestyle Village was held which attracted 170 players and during February the men’s Summer Cup sponsored by Key Location – Ian Fitzgerald was successfully played.

Club membership is healthy for this time of the year.  We are well above recent years for total members and I certainly see new faces on the golf course which is great to see for the club.  Included in these figures is a very high number of trial members and we hopefully will convert a good percentage of these members to permanent categories.  I strongly encourage members to make all our new members welcome on the course and in the clubhouse.

Financially the club is pretty much in line with budget year to date. Total income is above budget which is reflecting the improved income from Food and Beverage sales, improved membership, increased golf services and improved golf merchandise sales.  Income from functions and the kitchen is growing with the club now employing our own kitchen staff for the Friday night family meal nights.  Under the direction of Des and Libby it is hoped to expand the food availability at the club for our members and their guests.  Tami Mepham is also cooking a selection of cookies and cakes that are popular with our members.

The  BGC Junior Committee was re-established in November 2018 and the southwest Junior committee structure has also been revitalised. The BGC Junior Championships and DBK BGC Junior Open were run successfully and the BGC Junior Champions for 2018 are 18 Hole – Sonny James, 9 Hole – Riley Burt and Tiger Tees – Pia Ferrari.  For the past 5 weekends our 9 most experienced juniors have been making the trip to Perth to represent the South West/ Goldfields Junior Pennant teams. Our Division 2 boy’s team were undefeated and became the first regional junior pennant team to win a flag. Congratulations to Byron Burton, Bailey Hampson and Sonny James on an outstanding achievement.  Louis Mazza and Krishan Burgemeister represented the Division 4 boy’s team, which finished only 2 points out of first place.  Taylah Hall, Elena Mazza, Leonie McAdam and Rosie Macaulay gained valuable experience playing in the Division 2 girl’s pennant with the highlight being Taylah’s 3 wins and 1 half across the 5 matches.  Also Taylah Hall has commenced a Golf Traineeship and we wish her well with this.

Shortly the men’s pennant season will commence and Bunbury will be fielding 3 teams in the metropolitan competition. The women will also be fielding a pennant team in A grade of the South West Ladies District Assn and 3 B grade teams in the WABLGA. We wish them all well for the new pennant season.
