Vale Jim Murray
Published on 24th January 2025 in Members NewsIt is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Life Member Jim Murray on Wednesday, January 22nd, at the age of 94.
Jim had been a dedicated member of the club for 61 years, having joined in 1964 alongside his wife Mary, with whom he played weekly until the end. In recognition of his extraordinary contributions, Jim was honoured with the highest accolade attainable at the club when he was nominated as a Life Member in 1998.
He served on the Board for a total of 11 years from 1969-1978 and again in 1988, occupying roles such as Club Captain in 1974 and 1975, and Club President from 1976 to 1978.
Jim had a profound affection for the course and volunteered weekly with the Sod Squad starting in 1990. He also served as the Leisure Club convenor for maybe a decade or more and contributed to numerous other projects around the club during these years.
A regular participant at all club events and competitions, Jim, along with Mary, will be dearly missed by many for their kindness and dedication in being just the loveliest of human beings. Jim achieved a low handicap of 6, qualified for three Club Championship Matchplay’s, and although he never advanced past the first round, he won the Vic Veale Shield consecutively in 1982 and 1983, plus achieved a low round score of 72, for which he still kept the golf ball.
With the recent passing of his wife Mary, our heartfelt thoughts are with their four children and their families.
In accordance with Jim and Mary’s wishes, there will be no funeral service. Instead, their family invites Jim and Mary’s close friends at the club to attend the spreading of their ashes on the golf course, followed by refreshments in the clubhouse. Details will be provided on the website next week once available.
