On behalf on the entire Golf Club, I am very pleased to acknowledge the outstanding achievement of our very own Don Treble in reaching 100 years of age. An outright gentlemen and golf enthusiast who is always entertaining, whether having a hit with him or just a chat. So many stories and a wonderful sense of humour. It was great to see Don in the Clubhouse on his birthday last week to mark the occasion with friends and members. Don is good !!
As many would be aware, the course will be closed from the 14th to 15th October to enable renovations to be undertaken. The greens and fairways will receive a much needed core to help the course to be prepared for the spring/summer growth period. The decision to close the course for two days was not taken lightly and was considered the most efficient way to do all the work necessary with the minimum inconvenience to golf for members. The course is so busy these days that is difficult to find enough time to do some of the necessary larger tasks required. Everyone’s patience and understanding is appreciated.
Work on the practice fairway is well underway with the area sprayed, rotary hoed, levelled and will be planted with Santa Ana couch. The renovations will continue over summer and the end result will provide a well grassed, level practice fairway which will not only look better but will assist in the retrieval/pick up of balls. Furthermore, I was pleased to hear that Sam Roberts is returning to the Club after some time spent skiing/working in Canada. Sam has expressed an interest in carrying out a turf management apprenticeship and he will re-commence work at BGC in early November. Welcome back Sam.
Finally, I wish to express our deepest sympathy to Joe Hadar’s family and friends. Joe was a keen golfer and popular member of the Golf Club. A dedicated family man, former Olympian and successful businessman – he will be sorely missed. RIP Joe Hadar.
