Terry Veale Summer Cup History

Terry Veale and the Veale family have been supporting Bunbury Golf Club with numerous events
sponsorships as well as significant financial contributions over many years.
Terry started playing at Bunbury when it was only a 9 Hole Course in 1948 starting as a caddy, then a
junior player before progressing to senior ranks. Terry has represented Bunbury many times over the
years and has won numerous Gold Letter events.
In 2006 Terry approached the President of Scroungers and suggested that he would like to
set up a series like his father’s Vic Veale Shield but held over the summer months. The
Scoungers committee supported the idea and the Terry Veale Cup commenced as an
individual player event.
In the summer of 2008 in a bid to stimulate more competition, the Combined Stableford Pairs
Match Play series started, with matches to be completed before the nominations for the Vic
Veale Shield in May.
Terry loved the idea of draw for partners as it would make you play with golfers you might
not normally play with. Competition was limited with the nominations capped to 64 players.
These were then divided into two handicap grades of 32 (High 0 – 15) & 32 (Low 15 +).
This continued for about 10 years without much change apart from a small tweak here and
there.
After 2018 the then Scroungers Committee altered some rules removing the draw for
partners element. This allowed players to pick a partner of their choice and set up their own
team. This change was implemented as players who didn’t like the partner they drew would
subsequently pull out and thereby setting up a possible walk over.
With many thanks to all players who have competed in this event over the year, we look forward to
this Summer’s event with the qualifying games all played in October to early December and the
finals being played in February 2023 to avoid the Christmas and New Year period along with the
annual holidays.
Bunbury Golf Club Scroungers sincerely thank Terry for his generosity. We all wish him the very best
in getting his health right and we are looking forward to his attendance at the Club whenever he can.
